Others have probably already figured this out, but if you have a number of your own created icons, I found a relatively easy way to search for them when I'm setting up apps or programs that let me pick my icon.  

When I name my icons I start them all with my name.  For example, instead of 'football' for a name I named it 'Chris Football.'  Now when I search my name all of my icons show up in a relatively small group.  

Obviously a common name like Chris also catches things like Christmas Tree, so there's some in the group that aren't mine.  But if you add a unique name or word to all your icons you can just search on that you find your items easily.
